Understanding Scarring

Scars form following trauma to the skin, especially after surgery. The greater the depth and severity of the incision, the greater the chance the patient will be left with a noticeable scar.

A normal scar begins developing during the first 48 hours after wound closure and can fade between 3 and 12 months. However, numerous factors including genetics, type of trauma and preventable aspects such as poor post operative care, can lead to abnormal scarring.

Keloid Scars

Raised, itchy. Surgical Excision likley if it progresses.

Hypertrophic Scars

Red, Ropey and Confiened to Borders

Atrophic Scars

Flat and depressed below skin. Common from acne

The Importance of Early Intervention

Silicone: The gold standard in scar prevention and mitigation

Silicone has emerged as a popular Scar Treatment Method with robust scientific backing. Numerous research studies confirm its effectiveness in preventing and reducing scar formation across various wound types.
Silicone Gels & Sheeting protect the scar tissue and mimic a layer of healthy skin. The hydrating layer signals the restorative cells not to overproduce collagen and other growth factors which can lead to abnormal scarring.

Modern Formulation

Uses new generation medical grade polymising silicone to form a semi-occlusive protective barrier, assist hydration and prevent skin irritation

Improves Scar Appearance

Flattens, smoothens, and improves the discoloration of aggressive scars like Keloids and Hypertrophic scars

Bio-compatible and Hypoallergenic

Works effectively with all skin types

Convenient and Easy to Use

It dries fast and is easy to use

Effective on Old Scars

It can even heal old scars in some situations, sometimes up to 20 years old

What is MediSIL?

Silicone Gel Sheeting & Scar Gel Treatment

MediSIL is a silicone treatment, in the form of scar gel or scar tape. It has the ability to reduce scarring and support incision wounds post suture removal.
✓ MediSIL gel facilitates the treatment and prevention of scars using a modern semi-occlusive silicone barrier.
✓ Silicone gel sheeting is a soft, self-adhesive sheet that is applied over a scar that assists in preventing and improving abnormal scars

Advantages

In a study of 20 cases, Fulton concluded that silicone was highly effective in reducing hypertrophic and keloid scars. In 17 of the 20 cases, the lesions softened and diminished within two months of treatment*.

What Are the Side Effects?

Silicone scar tape can sometimes cause skin irritation. Other potential side effects include burning, itchiness, and rashes. These complications are more likely if you live in a hot, humid climate or have sensitive skin and or leave tape on for prolonged periods in these conditions.

Quit using silicone scar tape right away if you experience any side effects. Reach out to a dermatologist or other appropriately trained clinical specialist if necessary.

Is Silicone Gel or Tape Better for Scars?

Both silicone gel and tape treat, manage, and prevent scars. Some studies indicate they are about equally effective, while others have found that silicone gel sheets are superior.

Whether you should choose silicone scar tapes or liquid drying gel depends on where your scar is located and your wear pattern, conditions and personal preference . You may find scar tape more convenient because it can cover a large area of the skin at once and does not need to be reapplied multiple times a day.

Also the tape has the benefit of removing tension on scar sites particularly important in early healing. In hot humid climates the tape may irritate the skin more particularly if worn for extended periods, then it drying gel may be better tolerated for extended wear or
Personal preference is also significant. Some users combine both, for example, one usage pattern is to start with tape and later gradually change to wear time to the drying liquid gel.
